How to discuss salary expectations in a job interview

Salary conversations become clearer when you understand the actual job. A sales role may involve shop-floor service alone or also messages and product updates. When searching for work in Baku, compare responsibilities, required experience, languages, travel time and working hours alongside the advertised figure.

Compare genuinely similar vacancies

Select several vacancies with similar tasks and experience requirements. Record fixed pay, the advertised range, days worked and additional duties. An upper figure including bonuses is not guaranteed income. If the listing card and detailed description differ, ask the employer to clarify before treating either as a confirmed offer.

Separate net pay, gross pay and bonuses

Ask whether the quoted salary is take-home pay or an amount before deductions. For bonuses, check the calculation, payout date and conditions. A fixed 600 AZN plus bonus does not automatically mean 1000 AZN income. Returns, targets and sales attribution may affect the result; the employer should explain the specific rules.

Use a reasoned salary range

You might say: based on the responsibilities and my experience, I am considering 900–1100 AZN net, and can discuss the full offer after understanding the schedule and bonus. These figures illustrate wording, not a market benchmark. Choose your own range and explain the work you can deliver rather than apologising for your expectations.

Work out your private minimum

Include transport, meals, shift frequency and time costs. This minimum supports your decision; it does not have to be your opening number. Ask about probation pay, additional hours and days off. Two offers with the same headline salary can have very different practical value.

Confirm the final offer in writing

A positive telephone conversation is not the same as agreed employment conditions. Check the position, workplace, fixed salary, bonus rules, schedule and start date in the written offer and contract. Discuss uncertain details before starting instead of assuming that they will be resolved later.

Prepare evidence of your skills

Bring two real examples describing a task, your action and its outcome. Do not invent achievements or figures. If there is no numerical result, explain your responsibility and quality of delivery. Use Workly vacancies to identify relevant opportunities and tailor your CV. Clear preparation supports a useful conversation without guaranteeing an offer.

What if the vacancy has no salary?

Ask for the planned fixed-pay range and the bonus conditions.

Can I give a range rather than one figure?

Yes, when you can explain it and both boundaries make sense for you.
