A job offer usually brings detailed conversations about the role and salary. The start date deserves the same care. An informal promise to begin “early next month” can leave a candidate and a manager planning for different days. A clear agreement gives both sides time to prepare and makes the first morning easier.
Use an exact calendar date
Write the day, month and year rather than “next Monday”. For a remote role, confirm the time zone of the introductory meeting. Ask whether you should arrive at an office or join a call, and check the address or meeting link. Compare any calendar invitation with the written agreement before accepting it.
Allow for existing commitments
Handing over a project, changing personal arrangements or travelling from another city can take time. Avoid promising a date you cannot meet. Explain the practical constraint briefly and suggest a realistic alternative. Check the arrangements for leaving your current role separately; a conversation with your future employer does not automatically change those obligations or procedures.
Ask about first-day preparation
Confirm the arrival time, the person to contact and the documents you need to bring. Find out whether equipment will be provided and whether any account setup is required beforehand. Send personal documents only through a verified company channel. A short preparation checklist is more useful than guessing requirements and sharing unnecessary information.
Put the agreement in writing
A simple message works: “I am confirming our agreed start date of 2 November. I will arrive at the specified address at 09:00. Please let me know if anything else is needed before my first day.” Replace these details with your own agreement. Keep the employer’s confirmation and add the appointment to your calendar.
Raise changes early
If circumstances change, contact the responsible person before the final evening. Explain the issue, propose a replacement date and request confirmation. Silence should not be treated as acceptance of a new arrangement. When searching for roles on Workly, keep a separate note for each application so that interview dates, offers and agreed starting days do not become mixed up.
